The Akashic records (Akasha is a Sanskrit word meaning "sky", "space" or "aether") is a term from Hinduism that was incorporated into Theosophy denoting a collection of mystical knowledge encoded in a non-physical plane of existence.

The records are supposed to contain all knowledge, including all human experience, of the history of the Cosmos. The Akashic records are metaphorically described as a library and are also likened to a universal computer or the 'Mind of God'. The records are supposed to be constantly updated. The concept originated in the theosophical movements of the 19th Century, and remains prevalent in New Age discourse.

A theosophical term referring to an universal filing system which records every occurring thought, word, and action. The records are impressed on a subtle substance called akasha (or Soniferous Ether). In Hindu mysticism this akasha is thought to be the primary principle of nature from which the other four natural principles, fire, air, earth, and water, are created. These five principles also represent the five senses of the human being.

Some indicate the akashic records are similar to a Cosmic or collective consciousness. The records have been referred to by different names including the Cosmic Mind, the Universal Mind, the collective unconscious, or the collective subconscious. Others think the akashic records make clairvoyance and psychic perception possible.

Akashic Records, to put it very simply, is a cosmic library without boundaries. Although it is incomparable with any earthly library, one can liken it to an earthly library for the purpose of understanding.

Just as any earthly library contains information and knowledge, this cosmic library also contains knowledge and information. Every thought that passed through the mind of man and woman, every word uttered by tongue, and every action performed, in addition to records of lifetimes, valuable soul lessons learnt, blueprints for future lives on earth, and so on are recorded and stored in the Akashic Records.

Some people refer to these cosmic records as the collective mind or the collective consciousness or the collective unconscious. People with special psychic abilities can have a peep into these massive celestial records and gain an understanding of what ails a soul on earth. Akashic Record readings are believed to be extremely consoling and enlightening. Knowledge of Akashic Records is not new. The Vedic people knew about them. In fact, the word Akashic has its roots in the Sanskrit "Akasha," which means "sky." The Moors, the Tibetans, the Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Chinese, Hebrews, Christians, Mayans, and Druids knew about them. The sages of ancient India used to talk about each jivatma or soul recording its moments on earth in a cosmic "book," which could be assessed by people with special physic abilities.

Some prominent people who claimed that they could access these Records were Nostradamus, Charles Webster Leadbeater, Alice Bailey, William Lilly, Lilian Treemont, George Hunt Williamson, Max Heindel, Annie Besant, Samuel Aun Weor, Manly P. Hall, Dion Fortune, Rudolf Steiner, and Edgar Cayce.

Anybody can access the Akashic Records because this spiritual library is open to all. Since they are a record of all life experiences and thoughts, they contain solutions to any problem on earth. To gain access however, an individual has to put in a lot of effort. He/she has to practice Yoga, Pranayama, meditation, prayer, visualization, and many more. Silencing the mind and relaxing the body is of great importance. One has to become an objective witness, achieve great focus, and relax completely in order to be able to peep into the collective consciousness.

Needless to say, the scientific community dismisses the idea of any cosmic library with an impatient wave of its hand. There is no evidence, the rationalists say.
